Poems Of Appreciation: Water

Poems Of Appreciation: Water

Living as a Dutch expat in the Philippines, I’ve found renewed appreciation for all things larger than life. In this Poem of Appreciation I pay tribute to: water.

Water

It’s above and below, behind and in front.
It’s to the left and the right, it makes sharp what was blunt.

It’s life and it’s death, it takes what it wants.
Without it, no island, but with it, no sun.

It’s expected and wanted, when the faucet’s turned on.
Its unimpressive arrival, never merits a song.

When drops do not come, become weak, will the strong.
What remains then is fear, over what might well go wrong.

It’s a fickle companion, in this sweltering spot.
It’s the cold, healing balm, in a wild melting pot.

It strikes in the night, with a force rarely seen.
It shatters, it floods, it makes quite a scene.

To some it’s a nightmare, that had never been.
To others it’s normal, one dare say routine.

It cleanses and cools, that what’s dirty and hot.
It changes us all, in more ways than we thought.

It’s a fickle companion, in this sweltering spot.
It’s the cold, healing balm, in a wild melting pot.
